Everything you need to know about azelaic acid
By Emma Stenman, Licensed skin therapist
Azelaic acid is one of the milder acids in the world of skincare. But don’t be fooled - despite being gentle, azelaic acid still delivers powerful results for the skin. This active ingredient has become increasingly popular in skincare, and we truly understand why. It is a multifunctional ingredient that can help address several common skin concerns at the same time.
Azelaic acid occurs naturally in our skin, but the version used in skincare is often derived from grains such as wheat. It is mainly used in leave-on products, which means you do not wash it off after application. At Common Clouds, you can find azelaic acid in our popular Cloud Milk.
This gentle acid works for all skin types but is especially effective if you have any of the following concerns:
This skincare ingredient has a powerful antibacterial effect that helps treat acne effectively. It is also strongly anti-inflammatory, which makes it particularly good at calming rosacea and reducing redness. Azelaic acid also balances the skin’s oil production and reduces clogged pores. If you have acne or rosacea, this acid can quickly become a key ingredient in your skincare routine.
Azelaic acid slows down the overproduction of melanin, which effectively reduces hyperpigmentation such as post-acne marks and melasma. At the same time, it helps calm redness in the skin, making it especially suitable for sensitive skin and rosacea.
This ingredient is versatile and has a wide range of uses, which is exactly why we love it!
Yes, you can! Cloud Milk contains 10% azelaic acid, which studies have shown to be the most effective level for treating acne and redness. If you are worried about skin reactions, you can start by using the product 2–3 times per week and gradually increase the frequency.
Yes, absolutely! Azelaic acid does not make the skin more sensitive to the sun, which makes it safe to use during summer. Since it is an acid, it is always recommended to combine it with sunscreen to protect the skin and prevent new hyperpigmentation. If you have acne, SPF is especially important to prevent long-lasting marks and scars.
Yes, you can! It is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but as always it is important to listen to your skin and introduce the product gradually.
Azelaic acid is a fantastic ingredient that occurs naturally in several common grains. However, it can sometimes have a slightly sour scent. Since Common Clouds does not add fragrance or other scenting ingredients, our products contain nothing that masks the natural smell of the raw ingredients. If you notice that Cloud Milk has a slightly sour or “earthy” scent, you can rest assured - it disappears as soon as the product is absorbed by the skin. Most people also experience Cloud Milk as completely fragrance-free!
Salicylic acid (in our bestselling Cloud Water) and azelaic acid (in our serum Cloud Milk) are a perfect combination for acne-prone, sensitive skin. Together they help dissolve clogged pores, balance oil production and reduce inflammation, which helps prevent breakouts. The combination also helps reduce redness and counteract hyperpigmentation.
Apply Cloud Water to cleansed skin before using Cloud Milk. If you have very sensitive skin, it may be helpful to start by using them in separate routines, at least initially.
Yes, it’s a great combination to calm, hydrate and strengthen the skin! Both Cloud Milk and Moon Balm help reduce redness and balance oil production, making them ideal for skin prone to acne or rosacea.
